51st Annual NJ Concrete Awards Dinner

On Thursday May 8th, the NJIT CIM program, represented by ten CIM students including Dr. Mohamed Mahgoub and Anlee Orama, attended the 51st NJ concrete Awards Ceremony at The Heldrich in New Brunswick, NJ. The event recognizes New Jersey’s Outstanding Concrete Projects of 2013. Dr. Mohamed Mahgoub is grateful to have served as a judge for the awards for the third year in a row. Many thanks to our student Sponsors: NJ ACI Chapter, Weldon Concrete Co., and R.M Murdock Co. The event is always a great opportunity to meet old and new friends especially our local CIM Patrons.

The CIM program would like to congratulate Dianne Johnston, Executive Director ofNJ ACI Chapter, and Antonio Vazquez, President of Berto Construction,  for receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award for their great accomplishments in the concrete industry. Dianne Johnston has been an invaluable resource and friend to the NJIT CIM program by providing opportunities for our students to become ACI certified in various certification programs as well as working with the NJIT ACI student chapter in many aspects.

We are also proud to announce that NJIT was the recipient of the Green Apple Award, the first of its kind, for the highly sustainable Warren Street Village Project. Representing on behalf of NJIT was Mr. Joseph F. Tartaglia, Sr. VP for Administration Treasury. It is an honor to see our University represented among the concrete industry’s finest achievements.

NJIT Patron's Meeting

On Friday May 2nd, 2014 the NJIT CIM program hosted the spring Bi-Annual Northeast Patrons meeting in Eberhardt Hall in the NJIT campus. The meeting is designed to provide a fruitful venue for our supporting Patrons to personally visit NJIT and learn about what the CIM program is achieving and how they can become involved and engage with the students. Attending the meeting were our distinguished CIM Local Patrons, CIM graduates and students, NJIT Administration, and special guests. Dr. Mohamed Mahgoub, CIM Program Director, and Anlee Orama, CIM Specialist, are exceedingly grateful for all sincere supporters.

Our NE Patrons Board of Directors includes Chairperson Jamie Gentoso, Larry Silvi, Bill Layton, and Mike Gentoso. They work arduously to secure a vibrant Patrons group and support the CIM program and its students.  We look forward to the growth of the Patrons group as our student enrollment is also increasing. More job opportunities will be required to continue the 100% job placement achievement we currently have. Also with us representing the CIM National Steering Committee was Nicole Maher, NRMCA Chief Operating Officer, whom also took the time to interview students for a summer internship opportunity.

Every Patrons meeting is enhanced with the presentations of our excellent students and graduates. Three CIM students and one CIM graduate presented their work and experience. The quality of the work of our students is evident to all our Patrons. We were honored to have with us Dr. Joel Bloom, NJIT President, Dr. Fadi Deek, NJIT Provost, Dr. Basil Baltzis, Interim Dean of the NCE, Vincent Lombardo, Director of Development for NCE, and Dr. Ronald Rockland, Chairman of Engineering Technology. Many more notable NJIT faculty and staff attended the event.

The NJIT CIM program is becoming widely recognized in the university. With time, the CIM program has proven itself to be successful in many aspects. The students are happy, they get jobs, and they love what they do. Speaking of jobs, we coordinated a CIM job fair immediately after the meeting to give an opportunity to some of our Patrons to interview our students for internships and full- time jobs. Over 25 students interviewed with multiple companies and we are looking forward to making the job fair a tradition at the Patrons meeting. Companies that interviewed included Sika Corporation, BASF, Delaware Valley Concrete, NRMCA, Coreslab Structures, Beyond Concrete, and Hycrete. Many other companies also took the time to network with the students.

We would like to give special thanks to Edna Randolph, Assistant to Chair of Engineering Technology, and Marcia Eddings, Administrative Assistant of Engineering Technology for coordinating the event preparations and food catering. Once again we thank everyone that made this extraordinary event possible and we look forward to seeing each and every one of you including many more in our next Patrons meeting which will take place on December 11th, 2014 from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm in the more spacious NJIT Campus Center Atrium.
