Once again the NJ ACI Chapter hosted a delightful dinner meeting at the Rutgers University Busch Dining Hall in Piscataway, NJ on Tuesday, November 29th, 2011. Dianne and Jim Johnston made a great effort coordinating the meeting as well as greeting the guests and running a generous open bar cocktail hour. The speakers of the night were Greg Kerrigan and Matthew Skidmore, Project Managers for The Conti Group. They discussed the challenges of the Rt. 18 project, including traffic shifts and staging, and stressed on the impressive concrete work. The presentation showcased the diverse utilization of concrete from shotcrete, SCC, cellular concrete, precast, architectural concrete, as well as specialty boulderscape concrete technology. It was a great experience for our CIM students to see first-hand how concrete construction is evolving into a high-performance operation.
Attending the event along with myself and Dr. Mohamed Mahgoub, CIM Program Director, were four CIM students: Christopher Worthington, John Te, Sherif Ghobrial, and Nicholas Thomas. I would like to give special thanks to the ACI student sponsors Joe Tanis & Sons, Weldon Materials, and Allyn Luke, NJIT Civil & Environmental Engineering. Attendance by student ACI members would not have been possible without their generous support. Speaking of ACI students, it was a great opportunity to meet nearly 20 Rutgers student attendees sharing our same vision of the concrete industry. Finally, we were invited to the Rutgers concrete laboratory to see their great facility and learn about their concrete projects.
