Students Attend 2013 NRMCA Conference

Two students from NJIT CIM attended the 2013 National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) conference held in Las Vegas, Nev. Anlee Orama, CIM Specialist, and students Alma Villalba and Disan Katumba attended. The students participated as judges for the 2013 NRMCA National Mixer Driver Championship which consisted of professional concrete mixer truck driver contestants tested in a challenging course where they had to prove their driving skills navigating through various trials.

NRMCA OES Meeting Held in New Jersey

On April 3^rd –April 4^th , the NRMCA's Operations, Environmental and Safety Committee (OES) convened in Newark, NJ to discuss the several issues and subjects of the ready mix industry. Also discussed was the upcoming ConcreteWorks convention this September which will be held in Washington D.C. Two CIM students attended the meetings each day and were recognized along with the CIM program  by Gary M. Mullings, Senior Vice President, Operations and Compliance, and Doug Ruhlin, Environmental / Sustainability Consultant at Resource Management Associates. NJIT would like to give special thanks to Doug for coordinating the students attendance to this meeting.

NRMCA's Garbini Addresses NJIT

On Tuesday evening, March 27, the CIM students had the opportunity to meet Mr. Robert Garbini, President of National Ready Mix Concrete Association (NRMCA). Founded in 1930, the NRMCA is the leading industry advocate. Its mission is to provide exceptional value for its members by responsibly representing and serving the entire ready mixed concrete industry through leadership, promotion, education and partnering to ensure ready mixed concrete is the building material of choice. Mr. Garbini gave a wonderful presentation titled “ What is the Role and Importance of An Industry Trade Association”. We were humbled by Mr. Garbini’s great effort in traveling over two hours to reach NJIT to share his passion for the CIM program. The CIM students received powerful insights into the business aspects of the concrete industry and learned about historical trends in ready mixed concrete production. Mr. Garbini also stressed the importance of being aware of the economic and financial data of the construction industry which is vital to the success of any business in the concrete industry. The CIM program would like to thank Mr. Garbini for the presentation and his devotion to the success of the CIM program.

CIM Exhibits at ConcreteWorks

The Concrete Industry Management program recently exhibited at the NRMCA ConcreteWorks and Board of Directors Meeting in SanDiego California. During the event, CIM students and faculty participated in sessions, networking events and the exhibits. Thanks to NRMCA for their generous donation of exhibit space and registrations.

Wally Johnson Receives NRMCA 2011 Chairman's Award

U.S .Concrete is proud to announce that the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) has awarded its 2011 Chairman’s Award to Wally Johnson, U.S. Concrete’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing. The Chairman’s Award is one of the most prestigious awards in the industry and is granted each year in appreciation for extraordinary dedication to the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association and the industry.


Wally has been involved in the concrete industry for over 30 years, including 7 years with U.S. Concrete and 24 years with the construction products division of W.R. Grace where he served as the North American Sales Manager. He has been actively involved in numerous industry associations and committees over his career, as well as a key fundraiser for the Concrete Industry Management education program and the RMC Research and Education Foundation.

“Wally’s dedication to the industry is unparalleled,” said Michael W. Harlan, President and Chief Executive Officer of U.S Concrete, Inc. “The Chairman’s Award is well deserved for his outstanding and exemplary contribution to the concrete industry.”

2011 NRMCA Annual Convention

Today, Monday March 21, was the second day of the 2011 NRMCA Annual Convention at the prestigious Paris Las Vegas Hotel. The CIM students started the day with attending the Awards Breakfast then attended the Materials Division General Session. The day ended by attending the NRMCA Board of Directors Meeting (with lunch). One of our students, Wilton Arellano, had another internship interview today with Prairie Material. Today, two of the CIM National Committee Chairs were receiving NRMCA Chairman’s Award:


Julie Garbini, the CIM Chairwoman of Research Committee and NRMCA Executive Director for Research and Education Foundation.

Wally Johnson, the CIM Former Chairman of Auction Committee.

CIM Students had a great opportunity to network with the conference attendees. I had positive feedback from all of them.

NRMCA Hosts CIM

Today, Sunday March 21, was the first day of the 2011 NRMCA Annual Convention at the prestigious Paris Las Vegas Hotel. Along with CIM students from Middle Tennessee State University, California State University, and Arizona State University; four NJIT-CIM students attended the event: Julio Pecho, Wilton Arellano, Christopher Worthington and Robert Samul. The CIM students took shifts along the 15 hour day helping with the convention registration and room set ups. CIM students also attended the general session and committee meetings. They have also attended the Annual Members’ Meeting where new committee members of NRMCA were nominated and elected. Directly following this meeting the students then attended a Luncheon where David Crowe and Robert Garbini spoke. At night the NJIT students along with other students from other CIM schools had an opportunity for networking at a dinner and auction, sponsored by many companies within the industry. Two of our students were interviewed by one of the companies in Maryland for potential summer internships.

We have also met Mike Schneider the Chairman of CIM National Steering Committee and Baker Concrete Vice President.

NRMCA has offered all CIM students who attended the conference business cards free of charge. Towards the end of the auction, it was really great to see one of the CIM students at NJIT, Robert Samul, bid for the four NY Yankee tickets twice for $650 and $825. Robert has also bid for the blue Topaz ring for $450. Students had a great opportunity to network with the conference attendees

CIM Participation in NRMCA's ConcreteWorks

A total of ten Concrete Industry Management (CIM) students (eight from MTSU and two from NJIT) attended NRMCA’s ConcreteWorks Conference and Expo, held October 10 - 12 in Charlotte, NC. The students had a full slate of activities, including staffing a CIM booth in the Expo Hall to raise awareness of the program, acting as room monitors for the seminar programs, interviewing for internships and full-time job placement, and acting as judges for the Challenge Course at NRMCA’s National Mixer Driver Championship. Attendance at industry association events such as NRMCA’s ConcreteWorks provides students with educational opportunities as well as the chance to network with industry personnel who can provide advice and insight into their futures in the concrete industry.
