Updated List of CIM Auction Items

The Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program is pleased to release the updated list of items for their sixth annual auction at the World of Concrete. The auction is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 20 in the North Hall Room N262 of the Las Vegas Convention Center. The silent auction will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the live auction begins at 1 p.m.

CSU-Chico Students Provide Demonstration of Alcatraz Work at ASCC Conference

The Chico State CIM summer field school was represented at the American Society of Concrete Contractor's (ASCC) National Conference in Salt Lake City. At the Decorative

Concrete Council's outdoor display area, CIM students and Alcatraz interns Trevor Prater and Bryan James created a replica of a staircase they repaired on Alcatraz Island and demonstrated various standard and creative techniques they used on Alcatraz to match the colors and textures of 100-year-old, bay-weathered concrete.

Shellie Rigsby of Acanthus, Inc., a decorative concrete staining firm in Dallas, and Clark Branam of Scofield served as the student advisors for the project and were the leaders of the decorative aspects of the field school during the summer of 2010. By preparing the entire demonstration on site, Prater and James were able to create a live demonstration throughout the three day conference. The repair demonstration strongly correlated with the sustainable theme of ASCC's Decorative Concrete Council display area, as the nature of both historic concrete repair and the Alcatraz internship requires a focus on concrete durability and restoration rather than demolition by selectively repairing only problem areas and minimizing waste.

The ten-week-long Chico State CIM summer field school served as an internship for five Chico State CIM students, completing over 2,000 hours of cumulative work on the infamous prison grounds and highlighting many unique features the bachelor of science degree encompasses. It was an industry-supported pilot project designed to engage CIM students in managing and performing the evaluation, estimating, repair, and preservation of concrete structures while working outside of the technical parameters of a classroom. The field school is planned to continue in future summers providing the opportunity for many more CIM students to gain valuable field experience.

Chico Students Participate in Two Day Field Trip

Students from the Concrete Repair Class participated in a two day field trip to the San Francisco Bay Area in October. On the morning of the first day, the students worked with Robert Trout of the Lily Corporation (Robert traveled from the east coast expressly to work with the students) to prepare a site in the Presidio for field training in epoxy crack injection. Later that day, the group toured Harris Rebar's Livermore plant. That same day, they traveled back to Oakland to participate in a behind-the-scenes tour of the Caldecott Tunnel construction project complete with ongoing large-scale drilling and shotcrete application. Early the next morning, the students worked with Mr. Trout to epoxy inject the prepared crack and clean the site. The remainder of the day was spent on Alcatraz Island learning about concrete deterioration and viewing the work completed by their classmates during the 2010 summer field school.

Chico State Patron News

We are proud to announce that the Chico State CIM program is growing and getting better every day!  It is an undertaking we have done right, and it is already paying off dividends with highly qualified, motivated graduates that are working in our industry.  All 14 of last year's graduates are placed, and we believe we will have 16-18 graduates available after graduation in May. 

This month, we celebrate the "5th Anniversary" of the Chico State CIM Patron's group and our donations have supported operational costs establishing the program. We have enhanced it by providing scholarships to all qualified students, funds for students to travel to and participate in industry meetings and trade shows, and purchased equipment for our concrete lab.  We have also sponsored summer field schools at Pointe du Hoc, and on Alcatraz Island that have been a tremendous success by incorporating the "learn by doing" and "hands on" approach to learning about our products.  Everyone should be proud of our accomplishments and successes so far, and we are still in our formative years. Next year is important because we are completing all the requirements for permanent status in the California State University system. 

Finally, we had good news from Dean Mike Ward! He informed us that we now have dedicated office and classroom space that we can call our own.  Our plan is to convert this space into a high-tech learning center that will have electronic media support for distant learning applications. We will be able to conduct and participate in lectures with experts in their fields from anywhere in the world. 

NJIT Students Attend ACI Event

In spite of the snow storm , Seven CIM  Students have attended NJACI Dinner at 6 pm tonight at the Pines Manor, in Edison, NJ.  We all enjoyed the wonderful topic presented by Damon Petrillo, the Project Manager of Tutor Perini/Civil group and Casimir Bognacki, the Chief of Materials Engineering of Port Authority of NY & NJ. The title of the presentation was “ JFK Reconstruction of Runway 13R – 31 L”. ACI NJ Chapter also announced the student who was awarded the annual 5000 USD scholarship.

I would like to thank Rich Liptak, the NJACI President and Dianne Johnston, the Executive Director for allowing our CIM students to have such wonderful time to network with industry. I would like also to thank Weldon Materials and Joel Tanis & Sons Company for sponsoring our student’s dinner.

NJIT Field Visits and Socials

The Silvi Group recently hosted a successful social event with the CIM students. Special thanks to Larry Silvi and Bill Bryan for their great presentations and answering all student questions. The Silvi Group is one of the great supporters of CIM program and we thank them for all their efforts.

The CIM students recently took a field trip to Sika Corporation in Lyndhurst, NJ.

We wish to thank Ondrej Masek and the two CIM undergraduate and graduate students working with Sika - Sherif Girgis and Anlee Orama - for their great effort facilitating the visit and their presentation and the lab demonstration on pervious concrete.

Nunzio Amoresano, project superintendent with Turner Construction gave CIM students a tour of the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility construction site and answered questions about the project. Additionally, the students were able to attend the concrete placement for the super flat floor on the intersection of Lock and Bleeker Street. The state-of-the-art laser screening machine was used to make sure the surface is flat.   

Rotondo Weirich Enterprises- a leading precast module manufacturer in the United States - held a social at NJIT on December 1. Ayaz Ahmed, the Director of Recruiting and Employee Relations, made a great presentation about his company's projects in the United States and overseas. He also discussed job opportunities and internships offered by Rotondo Weirich to CIM students. We wish to thank Mr. Ahmed for driving three hours in the difficult weather to meet with CIM students and also thank Dr. Ron Rockland the Chairman of the Department of Engineering Technology for attending the social.

Cement Industry Lead the Way for 2011 Auction

The 2011 Concrete Industry Management auction at the World of Concrete is shaping up as possibly the biggest and best ever. A major reason for the optimism has been the overwhelming show of support from the cement industry. Virtually every cement producer has stepped up and donated either product or other bid worthy items to this year’s auction. In spite of the challenging economic environment facing the concrete construction industry; cement producers were the first to respond to the request for donations. With this strong show of support from the cement industry as a foundation Peter Brewin’s Auction Committee has steadily built on it with donations from all aspects of the industry. Suppliers and producers alike have stepped forward with donations that vary from the signature Mack Truck equipped with a McNeillus Company concrete mixer to concrete construction equipment and supplies, the latest project modeling software, fabulous sports packages to some of the country’s most fabled venues such as the Masters, Indy 500, Rose Bowl, and the Kentucky Derby. The annual CIM Auction held by the National Steering Committee is developing into the primary source of funding for the program so thanks to the support of many and the early and continuing leadership of our cement industry we will have additional resources to continue the growth and development of this important program. Mack and McNeilus Donate Truck and Mixer for CIM Auction

The Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program – a business intensive program that awards students with a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Concrete Industry Management – is pleased to announce the signature item for their sixth annual auction at World of Concrete is a Mack Truck model GU713 equipped with a McNeilus 11-cubic-yard Bridgemaster® concrete mixer donated by Mack Trucks, Inc. and McNeilus Co., a Division of Oshkosh Truck. The total combined value for this item is more than $160,000.


"To have a signature item such as this truck chassis donated by Mack Truck and a Bridgemaster® 11-cubic-yard concrete mixer donated by McNeilus Company is the strong foundation needed to help ensure a successful CIM Auction at the 2011 World of Concrete,” said Peter Brewin, CIM Auction Committee Chairman. “The fact that these two industry leading manufacturers have donated the ready mix truck and mixer speaks volumes of their commitment to the concrete industry and the importance they place on the CIM program. To participate in electronic auction bidding, bidders must register a week in advance. Those participating in the auction at the WOC can register on-site.

About CIM

Receiving tremendous support from the concrete industry, the CIM program was the first of its kind in United States – a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Concrete Industry Management. The need for such a program was recognized through the RMC 2000 movement in 1994 and was put into action by the Tennessee concrete industry. The end-result was a partnership between the concrete industry and Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) to develop the CIM program, implementing it with its first two students in 1996, and producing its first graduates in 2000. Since its humble beginning, the CIM program has expanded and now in addition to MTSU, it is offered at Arizona State University, California State University, Chico, Texas State University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Today there are over 600 students pursuing degrees in Concrete Industry Management, and hundreds of CIM graduates working in the concrete industry.

The goal of the program is to produce broadly educated, articulate graduates grounded in basic construction management, who are knowledgeable of concrete technology and techniques and are able to manage people and systems as well as promote products or services related to the concrete industry. It entails a broad range of courses, from English and history to science and mathematics. A series of required business courses such as finance, marketing, management and business law are also taken throughout the length of the program.

The concrete-specific courses teach the fundamentals of concrete, properties and testing, concrete construction and more. All of these courses provide much more than what is simply in the text – they emphasize problem solving, quality assurance and customer satisfaction. They utilize practical case studies and an internship to make sure the student obtains real-world experience essential to starting a successful career. Additional opportunities include on-campus socials and other events providing industry networking and professional development.
