NJIT CIM Program Pours NCE Concrete Rook

After months of design and preparation, Dr. Mohamed Mahgoub and a dedicated group of NJIT CIM students culminated phase one of a special project. The students, a mix of two CIM courses: senior project and independent studies in decorative concrete, took part in the pouring of a concrete rook.  The concrete rook is the symbol of the Newark College of Engineering (NCE). The rook is 6 ft. high and 3 ft. wide and was poured indoors in the carpenter machine shop at the physical plant building after the construction of the intricate formwork was completed. The form was built with the expertise of NJIT carpenter Mr. William Araujo and his assistant Mr. Edward Jones. Their involvement in the project was invaluable and we are highly grateful. The inspiration came from the pouring of a small 2 ft. by 1 ft. model made a few weeks earlier. The final rook will weigh over a ton.

The rook used a concrete mix with fibers and a special coloring mimicking the original “golden-red” shade of the NCE logo. The concrete was donated by County Concrete, and was facilitated by current CIM student Nicolas Denicoli, who works for the company. The final product will be installed in the epicenter of the NJIT campus near the Green where it will be visible to everyone. It will be a powerful marketing tool and bring great exposure to the CIM program. We would like to thank Dr. Basil Baltzis, Dean of NCE , and Dr. Ronald Rockland, Chair of Department of Engineering Technology for their review and approval of the project. Stay tuned for phase two of the project where the finished rook will be installed in its final location.

NJIT Media was highly enthusiastic about covering the pour. Ms. Tracey Regan, Department of Strategic Communication, and a professional photographer did an excellent job covering the work of the students. Allyn Luke, Manager of Concrete Laboratory, provided all the concrete testing equipment and facilitated the quality assurance. We extend our special thanks to Mr. Joe Tartaglia, Vice President for Facilities Management, Mr. Charlie Nieves, Manager of Physical Plant, for approving the use of the indoor facilities and the placement of the rook on the Green and their great support for the CIM program.

Texas A&M Recognizes Komas Achievement

Alumna honored as 1 of 5 most influential in concrete industry

Tanya Komas

Students gain plenty of “real-world” experience in concrete construction management and the preservation of historic concrete structures while interning in one of two programs led by Tanya Wattenburg Komas ’05, an architecture Ph.D. graduate from Texas A&M University.

Komas, an associate professor in the College of Engineering at California State University-Chico, directs the university’s Concrete Industry Management Programand mentors students at the Preservation Field School at Alcatraz— the San Francisco Bay island home of the once notorious federal prison, which is now a popular tourist attraction.

For her work in the two programs, Komas was cited in the Feb. 5, 2013 edition of Construction Magazine as one of the five most influential people in the concrete industry.

The CIM program at Chico State, one of five such programs in the U.S., prepares students for management careers in the concrete industry, blending business training with technical instruction and hands on experience with all forms of concrete. The students learn about manufactured concrete products, ready mix, construction contracting and the proper use of heavy construction materials and tools. Their education is enhanced with a mandatory summer internship working in the concrete industry.

“The industry needs young people who can jump in on the big issues, move straight into jobs and careers in the industry,” she said. “As CIM graduates, they have the ability to make change happen quickly. They have found their passion for concrete in college, they are already familiar with industry leaders, and they know that this is what they want to do.”

At the Alcatraz preservation school, which Komas co-founded through Chico State with the National Park Service, student interns manage repairs to 100-year old concrete structures at the former prison site, a U.S. National Historic Landmark.

“Students have to be prepared to think on their feet and perform every day,” said Komas, who mentors the students interns. “There are no easy answers when combining academic/industry best practices and introducing cutting-edge repairing materials and methods to century-old concrete at a historic site.”

They are held accountable at every level, she said, including project planning and implementation, talking with tourists and moving materials onto and around the island.

“It’s real-world, they have to make decisions and be prepared to defend the results,” she said.

CIM Program Holds Successful Auction at WOC

The National Steering Committee (NSC) for the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program – a business intensive program that awards students with a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Concrete Industry Management – raised more than $615,000 in gross revenue at its seventh annual auction, held in conjunction with the World of Concrete on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

"The NSC of the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program is pleased to report that the 2013 World of Concrete Auction equaled our highest gross proceeds total ever,” commented Mike Philipps, CIM Auction Committee Chairman. “This is a great example of the high value the concrete industry places on the CIM program. We had a record number of donated items and attendees at the Auction that helped make this year’s event a huge success."

The signature item this year was a Mack® Granite® concrete truck chassis with a McNeilus 11-cubic-yard concrete mixer donated by Mack Trucks, Inc. and McNeilus Co., a Division of Oshkosh Truck. The winning bidder of the mixer truck was Tim Ashley of Clovis Concrete in Clovis, New Mexico.

“We are very pleased with how everyone stepped up to donate and bid on the great auction items and support the CIM program,” continued Philipps. “The money raised will benefit the NSC and support the current CIM program as well as help fund future program expansion.”

“We were fortunate to have the incredible support of the World of Concrete (WOC) Show Management, Hanley Wood Publications and Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers,” said CIM Marketing Committee Chairman Brian Gallagher. “We thank the many companies such as McNeilus Companies, Inc., Mack Trucks, Inc., Somero Enterprises, and the numerous companies that donated items to the Auction to make it a complete success.”

In addition to the live auction, a silent auction was also held. This year CIM had record proceeds of over $50,000 in the silent auction. Auction items included cement, concrete saws, drills, mixers,  vibrators, safety equipment, screeds, fiber transport systems, dust collectors, decorative concrete tools, water meters, pumps, generators, training sessions, reference books, advertisements, laptop computers, sports travel packages, and golf and vacation travel packages.

About CIM

Receiving tremendous support from the concrete industry, the CIM program was the first of its kind in United States – a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Concrete Industry Management. The need for such a program was recognized through the RMC 2000 movement in 1994 and was put into action by the Tennessee concrete industry. The end-result was a partnership between the concrete industry and Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) to develop the CIM program, implementing it with its first two students in 1996, and producing its first graduates in 2000. Since its humble beginning, the CIM program has expanded and now in addition to MTSU, it is offered at Arizona State University, California State University, Chico, Texas State University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Today there are over 600 students pursuing degrees in Concrete Industry Management, and hundreds of CIM graduates working in the concrete industry.

The goal of the program is to produce broadly educated, articulate graduates grounded in basic construction management, who are knowledgeable of concrete technology and techniques and are able to manage people and systems as well as promote products or services related to the concrete industry. It entails a broad range of courses, from English and history to science and mathematics. A series of required business courses such as finance, marketing, management and business law are also taken throughout the length of the program.

The concrete-specific courses teach the fundamentals of concrete, properties and testing, concrete construction and more. All of these courses provide much more than what is simply in the text – they emphasize problem solving, quality assurance and customer satisfaction. They utilize practical case studies and an internship to make sure the student obtains real-world experience essential to starting a successful career. Additional opportunities include on-campus socials and other events providing industry networking and professional development.

The CIM program has and continues to provide future leaders for the concrete industry. To learn more about the program, visit www.concretedegree.com.
