CIM Announces Donation by Mack Truck and McNeilus Company for Annual Auction

(Las Vegas, Nev. January 3, 2011) – The Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program – a business intensive program that awards students with a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Concrete Industry Management – is pleased to announce the signature item for their sixth annual auction at World of Concrete is a Mack truck model GU713 equipped with a McNeiluis 11 cubic yard Bridgemaster concrete mixer donated by Mack Trucks, Inc. and McNeilus Co., a Division of Oshkosh Truck. The total combined value for this item is over $160,000.

"To have a signature item such as this truck chasis donated by Mack Truck and a Bridge-master 11cy concrete mixer donated by McNeilus Company is the strong foundation needed to help insure a successful CIM auction at the 2011 World of Concrete. The fact that these two industry leading manufacturers have donated the ready mix truck and mixer speaks volumes of their commitment to the concrete industry and the importance they place on the CIM program,” said Peter Brewin, CIM Auction Committee Chairman. “The 2011 CIM Auction now has the potential of being the best ever as the overall response of donated items from both producers and suppliers to the concrete industry has been outstanding," he added.

The truck is a 2010 Mack GU713 set forward front axle for Bridgemaster and includes:

• MP7-365M engine with US07 emissions with Mack engine brakes

• Fuller RTO14909ALL transmission

• Air Ride Cab and Bostrom Air Talledega driver seat

• Tilt -Tele steering column

• FXL20 20,000 lb. Mack front axle

The mixer is a white McNeilus Bridgemaster 11 cubic yard transit and includes:

• Air chute lock

The sixth annual auction will be held on Thursday, Jan. 20 in the North Hall Room N262 of the Las Vegas Convention Center. The silent auction will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the live auction begins at 1 p.m. Once again this year, Internet bidding will be available on the Ritchie Brothers website, www.rbauction.com. To participate in the Auction, bidders must register a week in advance.

CIM Graduate Profile: Leean Orama

Which CIM university did you attend and when did you graduate?   I graduated from NJIT on May 17, 2010. How has the CIM program prepared you for your graduation from NJIT and entrance into the business world?  The CIM program has not only broadened my knowledge in every aspect of the concrete industry, but also in the general construction business as well. The curriculum is designed to prepare its students not only to understand the building materials, but how to market and sell them to the masses as well as effectively run any concrete operation. The CIM program has engaged my interests in a wide field of construction sectors and that has allowed me to effectively diversify my interests. This in turn has helped me gain an edge and has helped me network across these different fields and pursue endless opportunities. Consequently I am thrilled to have been hired as a Field Engineer by the Turner Construction Company. What advice would you give to other current CIM students?  I would tell every current CIM student to not limit their interests to a specific facet of the concrete industry. As we all know concrete has many different markets and products that can virtually cater to every student's interests whether it's the management, research and development, product design, or the sales and marketing of whichever concrete market they wish to pursue. The CIM program works with businesses in providing summer internships. Have you been able to take advantage of that program or any other special program to develop your industry knowledge?  During the summer of my freshman year, I was able to intern for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in their estimating department. I learned engineering fundamentals early on that helped me during consequent years of school. During my sophomore year, I was hired as a Corporate Operations intern with Sika Corporation, a national patron of the CIM program. My final year in school I interned with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey once again, but this time with their Materials Engineering Department where I got to demonstrate every day at work what I've learned in our core lab classes. This internship was very exciting because I got to work overnight concrete pours on the World Trade Center project at Ground Zero. Have you been able to interact with the CIM patrons at NJIT? If so, in what capacity?  The CIM patrons have been very generous with their time and resources to make this program a success. Every semester the CIM department scheduled industry professionals to come in and give us comprehensive presentations of their companies and their functions within the company. These are not only very informative, but also a wonderful networking opportunity of which our students take full advantage.

CIM Students to Participate in Pervious Event

During the World of Concrete (WOC) show in Las Vegas, a new event will take place in the 10,000-square-foot area of the Gold Lot outside the North Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Pervious Live is the industry's only live forum on current pervious concrete technology. Also in this area, event sponsors will display, discuss, and demonstrate new equipment and test procedures for this material, which is becoming more popular.

  

Three pervious demonstration pads will be available for review by show attendees. One pad will be placed too dry to demonstrate raveling, and one will be placed too wet to show sealing. The third will be placed correctly. We are thrilled to announce that students from the Concrete Industry Management program at Middle Tennessee State University will install the slabs and will explain their construction.

This exciting event also complements training that will be offered from 1 - 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 17 at the show. Students taking the Classroom Training for Pervious Concrete Certification Program will learn the information necessary to pass the Pervious Concrete Craftsman/Installer/Technician Certification.

Throughout the week, students can take the Pervious Concrete Field Projects for Installer Certification course. Students who pass the performance evaluation will be issued credit for their efforts as completing one project of three successful construction projects with a total area exceeding 10,000 square feet. Perhaps that's why I find it so rewarding to support, through my role at Hanley Wood, the National Steering Committee (NSC) of the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program in its fundraising efforts. With your help, the annual World of Concrete auction has raised almost $2 million. These funds are used to support the five universities that offer our industry a unique degree.

The NSC's efforts represent only a small portion of our industry's financial commitment to establish and develop these programs. Schools receive operating funds from their states, but the real support comes from local patron groups. These groups raise local funds and provide industry mentors for school activities and classrooms.

My daughter thought she fooled me when she ordered the double pork chop entree for her birthday meal. She hasn't eaten that much food at one sitting in her life. So I wasn't surprised when she left with a take-away box for the next night's supper. I'm a soft touch when it comes to helping out.

NJIT Students Receive Pervious Concrete Certification

We are pleased to announce that during the first week in December, students in the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) received certification in pervious concrete.

The certification process included a morning lecture on the knowledge needed for contractors to manage the material, followed by a pouring of pervious concrete right on the NJIT campus. The pour, which was attended by many students not involved in the course, will be a future barbecue area and event space.  After the pervious concrete pavement was set, CIM participants took an examination to receive certification.

The program was sponsored by the PCA Northeast Cement Shippers Association.

Chico State Program Growing

We send best wishes to you at the end of this most difficult year for our industry.  But I want to remind everyone that our Chico State CIM Program is growing and getting better.  It is an undertaking we have done right, and it is already paying off dividends with highly qualified, motivated graduates that are working in our industry.  All 14 of last year's graduates are placed, and we believe we will have 16-18 graduates available after graduation in May.  The CIM Program at Chico State is something we all have built into a viable resource, and I don't need to remind you, the program belongs to you.  It will pay us back forever into the future.  This joint venture between Industry and Higher Education is one of the ways we can improve the way we educate our young people. 

Today is the "5th Anniversary" that the committee voted to incorporate the Foundation which became the "Chico State CIM Patron's".  Our donations have supported operational costs establishing the program. We have enhanced it by providing scholarships to all qualified students, funds for students to travel to and participate in Industry Meetings and trade shows, and purchased equipment for our concrete lab.  We have also sponsored summer field schools at Pointe du Hoc, and on Alcatraz Island that have been a tremendous success by incorporating the "learn by doing" and "hands on" approach to learning about our products.  Everyone should be proud of our accomplishments and successes so far, and we are still in our formative years. 

Next year is important because we are completing all the requirements for permanent status in the California State University system.  This will be a thorough academic review.  And, in the Fall, we will have our first accreditation visit that we are hoping to pass.  These are huge undertakings, and we feel we are ready.  

We had good news yesterday from Dean Mike Ward.  He informed us that we now have dedicated office and classroom space that we can call our own.  We plan to convert this space into a high tech learning center that will have electronic media support for distant learning applications.  We will be able to conduct and participate in lectures with experts in their fields from anywhere in the world.  We are very excited about the news and hope to be able to have it ready to show you for the Spring Board Meeting and Founder's Dinner.  The date for this important meeting is going to be Thursday, April 7, 2011, so please put it on your calendar. Our block of rooms at the Hotel Diamond is now available.  Both meetings last year were sold out, so it's not too soon to make your reservations.  Companies and individuals that have become "Founder's of the Chico State CIM Program" are going to be honored. 

We need to continue to receive donations.  If any of you that haven't participated this year can see your way to make a tax deductible donation, it would be accepted and appreciated.   There are 49 companies and associations, and 17 individuals participating as Founders, Patrons, and contributors, making this all possible.  To continue our success, we need to have more.  If you can, please help.
